Tribal Logo

The seal of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe is a relatively new image using ancient ideas and concepts to give a brief description and represent the Seneca Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma. The original was drawn by Tribal member Tommy Spicer, about 1963 when a few Tribal women (Josephine Cata, Ruby Diebold and Midge Kellogg) approached Tom and had asked if he would draw a picture that can be used for a Tribal flag and seal.

His first thought was of the Clans of the Seneca and Cayuga people, and the Ceremonial culture close to the people’s hearts. What he created was the Tribal Seal we see today flying on flags, accompanying Tribal Letterhead and all aspects representing the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.

In the Center of the Seal is the White Pine or Cedar Tree, either of which are a vital part of the Seneca Cayuga culture and heritage. To remind us of the Great Law and its principles as well as medicinal values to protect the community and its people. The roots will grow in all directions offering guidance to all the people that follow and believe in the ways of the Longhouse.

Under the shelter of this Tree of Peace, sets the copper pot used to cook our ceremonial communal foods. This reminder to the people that we will take care of our own, and no one shall go without. Next to the pot lay the Corn, Beans and Squash traditionally known as the Three (3) Sisters, our Life Sustainers of which are recognized specifically through songs and dances during our ceremonies.

Surrounding these are, the Bear Claw necklace with one claw for each Clan and an additional claw to represent those who have no clan for they are still a part of our community. The symbol of the Bear Claw represents the Strength and Bravery of our ancestors and our people today.

Circling all of this are the Clans of the Seneca Cayuga people including the Clans of families brought in through adoptions. The Clan system was created during historic times, through the ideas of our Creator to assist the people. The Clan system designated families a lineal descent, responsibilities in the community and a social organization within the Longhouse.

The Traditional Clans of the Seneca are Deer, Wolf, Bear, Turtle, Beaver, Snipe, Heron and Hawk and those of the Cayuga are Deer, Wolf, Bear, Turtle, Snipe and Heron. The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe through history has always been a coalition of various Nations to include Mohawks, Oneida’s, Onondagas, Tuscarora, Wyandotte, Shawnee, Tutelos, Conestoga, Erie and captives from the many wars of time. This attributed to the additional Clans represented on the seal such as the Squirrel, Snake, Porcupine, and Rabbit.

This Seal serves as a Tribal logo for the Seneca Cayuga Tribe and also of a reminder to its people of our History and Culture.
